    Modelling cytoskeletal traffic: an interplay between passive diffusion and active transport

    We introduce the totally asymmetric exclusion process with Langmuir kinetics (TASEP-LK) on a network as a microscopic model for active motor protein transport on the cytoskeleton, immersed in the diffusive cytoplasm. We discuss how the interplay between active transport along a network and infinite diffusion in a bulk reservoir leads to a heterogeneous matter distribution on various scales. We find three regimes for steady state transport, corresponding to the scale of the network, of individual segments or local to sites. At low exchange rates strong density heterogeneities develop between different segments in the network. In this regime one has to consider the topological complexity of the whole network to describe transport. In contrast, at moderate exchange rates the transport through the network decouples, and the physics is determined by single segments and the local topology. At last, for very high exchange rates the homogeneous Langmuir process dominates the stationary state. We introduce effective rate diagrams for the network to identify these different regimes. Based on this method we develop an intuitive but generic picture of how the stationary state of excluded volume processes on complex networks can be understood in terms of the single-segment phase diagram.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

    Recent results from the B factories and perspectives on SuperB

    The BaBar and Belle experiments, running mostly at the centerof-mass energy of about 10.58 GeV at the PEP-II e+e− collider at SLAC and at the KEKB e+e− collider at KEK, have recorded integrated luminosities exceeding 0.5 ab−1 and 1.0 ab−1, respectively. The results of the two experiments have confirmed the success of the CKM mechanism for flavor mixing and CP violation and are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. The SuperB experiment, a new generation flavor factory with very high luminosity (L = 1036 cm−2 s−1) will be able to record 75 ab−1 of data in five years of nominal data taking, which is about two orders of magnitude larger than the BaBar and Belle data samples. This new experiment has been proposed for searching for new physics effects in the flavor sector, mainly through precision measurements and searches for forbidden processes in B, D and τ decays. We report on recent results from the BaBar and Belle Collaborations, in particular on the measurement of the CKM angle γ and we present the physics reach of the SuperB experiment

    Anisotropic renormalized fluctuations in the microwave resistivity in YBCO

    We discuss the excess conductivity above Tc due to renormalized order-parameter fluctuations in YBCO at microwave frequencies. We calculate the effects of the uniaxial anisotropy on the renormalized fluctuations in the Hartree approximation, extending the isotropic theory developed by Dorsey [Phys. Rev. B 43, 7575 (1991)]. Measurements of the real part of the microwave resistivity at 24 and 48 GHz and of the dc resistivity are performed on different YBCO films. The onset of the superconducting transition and the deviation from the linear temperature behavior above Tc can be fully accounted for by the extended theory. According to the theoretical calculation here presented, a departure from gaussian toward renormalized fluctuations is observed. Very consistent values of the fundamental parameters (critical temperature, coherence lenghts, penetration depth) of the superconducting state are obtained.Comment: RevTex, 8 pages with 5 figures included, to be published in Physical Review

Methods of data collection done by survey method, while data analysis using rating scale analysis.The results reveal that the most dominant factor affecting the performance of accounting information systems at Bank Rakyat Indonesia Branch Office Bengkulu end user satisfaction factor is an average of 176, the second factor is the education and training programs by an average of 173, the next factor is the support of top management an average of 168 and the last factor is the ability of a personal technique average of 165

    Dynamic feeder dyke systems in basaltic volcanoes

    In this paper, we describe the 1809 eruption of Mt. Etna, Italy, which represents one historical rare case in which it is possible to observe details of the internal structure of the feeder system. This is possible thanks to the presence of two large pit craters located in the middle of the eruptive fracture field that allow studying a section of the shallow feeder system. Along the walls of one of these craters, we analysed well-exposed cross sections of the uppermost 15–20 m of the feeder system and related volcanic products. Here, we describe the structure, morphology and lithology of this portion of the 1809 feeder system, including the host rock which conditioned the propagation of the dyke, and compare the results with other recent eruptions. Finally, we propose the dynamic model of the magma behaviour inside a laterally-propagating feeder dyke, demonstrating how this dynamic triggered important changes in the eruptive style (from effusive/Strombolian to phreatomagmatic) during the same eruption. Our results are also useful for hazard assessment related to the development of flank eruptions, potentially the most hazardous type of eruption from basaltic volcanoes in densely urbanized areas, such as Mt. Etna

    Exclusion processes on networks as models for cytoskeletal transport

    We present a study of exclusion processes on networks as models for complex transport phenomena and in particular for active transport of motor proteins along the cytoskeleton. We argue that active transport processes on networks spontaneously develop density heterogeneities at various scales. These heterogeneities can be regulated through a variety of multi-scale factors, such as the interplay of exclusion interactions, the non-equilibrium nature of the transport process and the network topology. We show how an effective rate approach allows to develop an understanding of the stationary state of transport processes through complex networks from the phase diagram of one single segment. For exclusion processes we rationalize that the stationary state can be classified in three qualitatively different regimes: a homogeneous phase as well as inhomogeneous network and segment phases. In particular, we present here a study of the stationary state on networks of three paradigmatic models from non-equilibrium statistical physics: the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process and the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with Langmuir kinetics. With these models we can interpolate between equilibrium (due to bi-directional motion along a network or infinite diffusion) and out-of-equilibrium active directed motion along a network. The study of these models sheds further light on the emergence of density heterogeneities in active phenomena.Comment: 55 pages, 26 figure
